Event Guidelines

This page provides the basic event guidelines for Hack U.
Please note that individual events may have slightly different rules, so be sure to check the individual event pages for details.

Event Schedule

  1. Registration

    Interested participants should apply within the specified period. Entry is by team, with each team consisting of 2 to 6 members.


  2. Development Kick-off

    An orientation held on the first day of the development period. We request at least one person from each Team to participate.


  3. Development Period

    Teams are free to work from any location and at any time to complete their project and prepare for the presentation by the deadline.

    Employees from LY Corporation will be available online to answer your questions at any time, so feel free to ask anything!


  4. Optional Consultation Sessions

    Consultation sessions will be available on Zoom.

    Feel free to discuss any challenges, such as difficulties in organizing ideas or uncertainties about how to implement the ideas.


  5. Presentation, Exhibition, and Awards

    Present your project at the event venue (either online or offline). Each team will have 3 minutes for their presentation. The event may be streamed online. Several awards, including a judge award and audience vote awards, will be presented.


Eligibility

Open to students of all programming experience levels. *1


  • No gender restrictions apply.
  • Must be a student, pupil, or child. *2
  • Teams should be composed of 2 to 6 people. *3
  • Programming skills and experience are not prerequisites.
  • Participants must provide their own computers and devices for development and testing.
  • Agreement to the specified terms and conditions at the time of event registration is required. *4

*1 For events held at specific schools, conditions set by the individual event will apply.
*2 Open to students in elementary school and above (excluding working adult learners).
*3 At least one member of the team must participate and make a presentation at the presentation event.
*4 If the participant is a minor (under 18), a consent from the guardian is required to apply.

Rules

Each team is responsible for deciding their development process, and teams are free to work at times that suit them during the development period.
A 3-minute presentation, including demos or videos, is required at the presentation event.


  • All matters that are required to be submitted during the development period must be submitted by the deadline.
  • Each team will have 3 minutes for their presentation.
  • Projects can be in any form, including software, hardware, or a combination.
  • The project must be an original creation by the team members and developed during the development period. *1
  • Projects must be suitable for presentation at the venue (including online) and capable of demonstration during exhibition time. *2
  • Compliance with the "Code of Conduct" is mandatory.
  • "Guidelines on Intellectual Property and Related Considerations," must be complied with.
  • Projects must not violate public order and morals.
  • The use of APIs other than those provided by LY Corporation is permitted.
  • When using OSS, APIs, etc., licenses must be strictly observed for both projects and presentation materials.
  • Unauthorized use of copyrighted materials, such as manga, CD tracks, or photos, is prohibited. *3
  • Do not use information from educational institutions, companies, or organizations without permission.
  • Consent to the publication of presentation and project details on LY Corporation's website and in various media is required. *4
  • Intellectual property developed during this event will belong to the inventors themselves (the participating team members).

*1 Projects created in the past or presented at other events are not allowed.
*2 Projects that emit fire, extremely loud noises, or are too heavy to transport independently are not allowed.
*3 Teams found to have infringed on copyrights will not be allowed to make a presentation. If a project is deemed to contain copyrighted material of others, its presentation will be halted immediately.
*4 Information about the works from this event, as well as the production process and presentation scenes (photos and videos), may be used by the organizers or media for advertising and promotional activities, and participants are deemed to have agreed to this in advance.

Technical Support

During the development period, LY Corporation employees will provide support in areas such as ideas, various programming languages, screen design, and presentation materials.
While interactions will primarily occur via online chat, once your team is assigned a dedicated communicator, feel free to use any convenient channel for communication.

During the development period: Online support on the Discord channel for this event, online video chat will be available. Additional details will be announced separately to participants.

Judging Criteria

The following aspects will be judged comprehensively:

  • Novelty: Is there originality in the technology or its combination?
  • Technical excellence: Are the technologies used advanced?
  • Growth potential: What is the potential future impact?
  • Reproducibility: Is there a working prototype, not just an idea or presentation?
  • Thematic relevance: If there is a theme, does the project realize the theme?

Awards

Judges will select multiple outstanding entries for awards and supplementary prizes.
